Active Travel England is hiring two Graduate Planners to join our small and dynamic planning team. We're looking for applicants that are enthusiastic to be a part of ATE as it transitions from a new government agency to one that seeks to deliver meaningful change and better outcomes in new developments.

More information about the role and the wider planning team can be found below.

Who are we?

Active Travel England (ATE) was established as an executive agency of the Department for Transport in 2022, with our headquarters in York. We are responsible for making sure walking, wheeling and cycling are safe, attractive and accessible travel choices for everyone.

What does the ATE Planning team do?

As of 1 June 2023, ATE became a statutory consultee in the planning system, which means local authorities are required to consult ATE on the most significant developments across England.

The team works across government and alongside the wider planning sector, making use of planning policy and design guidance to help local authorities and applicants embed high-quality active travel infrastructure into new housing, employment and school developments.

"Active Travel England must be one of the best organisations to start a career in planning at. I have been given the chance to improve cycling, walking and wheeling infrastructure at developments across the country, which will have positive and tangible impacts for many communities.

"The training ATE provides is very comprehensive and has enabled me to enhance my technical planning skills. By being part of a team which has contagious enthusiasm for improving active travel everywhere, I have also gained a thorough understanding of the planning system and the sustainable transport sector."
- Tom Mills, Planning Intern 2024-25, ATE
