Designing for active school journeys

About this document

This guidance sets out best practice for designing environments that enable children, young people and accompanying adults to travel to and from school actively and safely. It establishes a clear expectation that the spaces and streets around schools should prioritise active travel, and that investment in local transport networks should provide safe, coherent and attractive routes linking homes, schools and everyday destinations.

This guidance applies to England only. It has been prepared by Active Travel England, supported by consultants Phil Jones Associates (PJA) and the University of the West of England (UWE). It has been produced in consultation with representatives from the development sector, local authorities and the Department for Education.
