Streets for Schools toolkit

About this toolkit

It is recognised that levels of active travel to places of education can be enhanced by pleasant and attractive street environments. Active travel interventions outside educational facilities, including schools, colleges and universities, are likely to result in improved safety and a more pleasant environment. This improves the health and wellbeing of students and staff when they are working or studying, as well as that of other members of the public and community, such as parents dropping their children off at school, people passing a college on their way to work and members of the public resting or socialising on the street.

The Streets for Schools toolkit can be used to support councils and partners in assessing and improving active travel provision for educational institutions. It provides three documents.

Streets for Schools tool

The Streets for Schools tool can help inform high-level plans related to where a local authority or responsible body can make changes to streets at schools, colleges and universities.

Good practice examples

This document shows two examples of good practice active travel design, based on existing guidance and the Streets for Schools tool. The visualisations are intended to provide ideas and inspiration for scheme designs.

Case studies

The case studies outlined in this document can be used to complement the Streets for Schools tool. They highlight examples of active travel provision in accessing educational institutions.
